How to Connect Sylvac Instruments to Sylcom
Sylcom supports both Bluetooth® and wired (USB or M-Bus) connections.
A. Connecting Sylvac Instruments via Bluetooth® Wireless Technology
Sylvac Bluetooth instruments offer wireless flexibility and fast data transmission. To use Bluetooth, a Sylvac BT dongle (ref: 981.7100) is required.
1. Setup Requirements:
- Sylvac Bluetooth® dongle plugged into your PC.
- If using multiple dongles, use USB extenders and keep at least 10 cm between each to reduce signal interference.
2. How to Connect Bluetooth® Instruments:
- Open Sylcom software on your PC.
- Enable Bluetooth on your instrument (the Bluetooth icon should blink).
- Enter pairing mode on the instrument (refer to the user manual).
- In Sylcom, click “Scan” to search for nearby devices.
- Select your instrument, then click “Connect”.
3. Managing Bluetooth® Devices in Sylcom:
Sylcom provides two panels for Bluetooth® management:
- Bluetooth Dongles Panel – Lists all active dongles.
- Bluetooth Instruments Panel – Displays:
- Instrument name, MAC address, and current reading
- State:
- Green: Instrument is connected and ready.
- Orange: Instrument is attempting to connect.
- Red: Instrument is not connected.
- Profile
- Simple – Temporarily connects during active use (available to other PCs afterward).
- Paired – Permanently linked to one PC regardless of use status.
B. Connecting Sylvac Instruments via USB
To connect your Sylvac instrument using a USB cable:
1. Plug the instrument into your PC via USB.
Ensure the cable is securely connected and the instrument is powered on.
2. Check Device Manager.
The instrument should appear under COM/LPT Ports as a USB Serial Port (e.g., COM8).
- For Proximity-USB: Blue LED must be on.
- For Opto-USB: Red LED must be on.
- For Power-USB: Instrument must be switched on, as power is supplied through the cable.
C. Connecting Sylvac Instruments via M-Bus
For advanced setups involving specialized or multiple instruments—such as M8 P5 probes, air gauges, or temperature sensors—Sylvac offers the M-Bus (Multiplexer Bus) connection system. This method is designed for scalable and precise data acquisition and is available exclusively with the Sylcom “Advanced” license.
M-Bus allows you to connect a wide range of Sylvac instruments through a modular chain of M-Bus components, all linked to the PC via a central MB-RS module.
How to Connect Sylvac Instruments via M-Bus:
1. Connect Instruments to M-Bus Modules
Use Sylvac M-Bus cables to connect your instruments to the appropriate M-Bus modules.
2. Chain Modules to the MB-RS Module
All M-Bus modules must be linked in series (daisy-chained) and finally connected to the MB-RS module, which interfaces with your PC via USB.
3. Power On All Devices
Switch on the power supply to the MB-RS and all connected modules and instruments.
4. Wait for Full Initialization
If many devices are connected, the system may take some time to initialize.
- Important: Do not launch Sylcom until initialization is complete.
- Watch the blue LEDs on the M-Bus modules — wait until all stop blinking, indicating the system is ready.
5. Launch Sylcom Software
Once initialization is complete, open the Sylcom application. All connected instruments will be automatically detected and ready for measurement.
