A force gauge is a precision instrument used to measure the amount of force applied to an object, whether it is tension (pulling) or compression (pushing). These tools are essential across many industries, including electronics, automotive, manufacturing, and quality control.

What is a Force Gauge?

A force gauge, also known as a push-pull gauge, is a device used to measure the force applied to an object. It is capable of detecting both compression (push) and tension (pull) forces.

Force gauges come in two main types: mechanical and digital. Mechanical force gauges display the force using a dial, while digital models feature an LCD screen and often include advanced functions such as peak force capture, data logging, and unit conversion. Most force gauges are compact, portable, and easy to use, and they can be operated manually or with accessories like test stands and grips to enhance accuracy and consistency in testing.

  1. Sensor Shaft: Apply force in line with this threaded shaft using the included attachments.
  2. Display: The LCD screen shows measurement readings and other key information.
  3. PEAK Button: Toggles between real-time and peak force measurement modes.
  4. UNIT Button: Switches between available measurement units.
  5. ZERO Button: In Standard mode, it tares the gauge to zero; in PEAK mode, it resets the peak value.
  6. MEM Button: Activates data recording when in Standard mode.
  7. POWER Button: Turns the force gauge on or off.
  8. AC Adapter Port: Connects to the provided AC adapter for external power supply.
  9. Data Output Port: Enables connection for external data output options.
  10. USB Port: Allows PC connection for data transfer and communication via USB.
  11. Hanger Attachment Bolt: Secures the hanger attachment for suspension or storage.
  12. Threaded Holes: Used to mount the gauge to a test stand or fixture for stable operation.

 

Function of a Force Gauge 

Force gauges are used to measure:

  • Tensile strength

  • Thrust or compression force

  • Adhesion strength

  • Coefficient of friction (COF)

  • And other physical forces

They can be used as standalone handheld devices or integrated into a more complex testing system using specialized fixtures and test stands for increased accuracy and repeatability.

 

How to Measure Force

There are two common methods to measure force:

1. Using a Spring Balance

A mechanical spring is attached to a hook. As a load is applied, the spring stretches, and the attached scale displays the force. This is a traditional method and is best for basic demonstrations or low-precision measurements.

2. Using a Force Gauge

This is the most accurate and modern method. Simply apply the force to the object, and the digital or mechanical gauge displays the measurement, often in real-time. Digital models typically offer higher precision and additional features.

Most force gauges are user-friendly and can be operated by hand. For more accurate and repeatable results, they can be paired with:

  • Test stands – to control movement.

  • Grips and clamps – to secure test objects.

  • Custom attachments – depending on the application.
