Accurate measurement is one of the most demanding skills in watchmaking. At the bench, we work in hundredths and even thousandths of a millimeter, where the smallest deviation can affect the entire movement. In this article, we explore the measurement tools that matter on the bench, particularly for professionals involved in building, repairing, or manufacturing mechanical watch components.
Digital Micrometer
A digital micrometer is one of the most essential precision measurement tools in watchmaking. It is primarily used to measure outside diameters (OD) with high accuracy. In mechanical watch manufacturing and repair, micrometers are commonly used to measure pivots, arbors, pinions, and small shafts. A quality digital micrometer provides accuracy down to 0.001 mm, while advanced models can reach 0.0001 mm resolution, ideal for micron-level tolerances in horology.
When measuring ultra-small pivots (especially below 0.20 mm), extra care is required. Excessive measuring force can damage delicate components. In these cases, the design of the spindle and the stability of the instrument directly affect both part safety and measurement consistency.
SYLVAC S_Mike Pro Smart
For professional workshops that require both precision and digital data recording, the SYLVAC S_Mike PRO is designed for high-accuracy applications. Its non-rotating spindle reduces stress on fragile watch components, while integrated Bluetooth allows direct data transfer to SPC systems for quality control documentation. It is available in three measuring ranges: 0–30 mm, 30–66 mm, and 66–102 mm. Standard resolution is 0.001 mm, with enhanced 0.0001 mm resolution available on model 803-0306.
Digital Caliper
A digital caliper is a versatile measuring tool widely used in watchmaking workshops. It allows users to measure outside diameters (OD), inside diameters (ID), and depth with a single instrument. In machining and assembly processes, digital calipers are useful for quick dimensional checks. They improve efficiency and reduce setup time, especially in small-batch production or repair work.
However, for high-precision watchmaking applications, it is important to recognize their limitations. Depth measurements on very small components can vary depending on hand pressure and alignment. When tolerances are extremely tight, a micrometer or dedicated measuring system will provide better repeatability.
SYLVAC S_Cal EVO Smart Micron
The SYLVAC S_Cal EVO Smart Micron caliper is designed for professional use, combining durability with advanced digital output capability. This high-resolution professional caliper features integrated Bluetooth® technology and offers a micron-level resolution of 0.001 mm. It is available in three measuring ranges: 150 mm and 200 mm.
Bench Measurement Tables
Sylvac has developed a range of measuring benches that enable small external and internal dimensions to be checked quickly and precisely. As component miniaturization continues to advance across all industrial fields, these instruments provide reliable solutions for even the most demanding applications.
Sylvac Micro Bench Table Measurement PS15
The Sylvac PS15 is a compact horizontal bench designed for measuring external dimensions up to 10 mm. It features a measuring capacity of 20 mm and a measuring range of 10 mm. This bench can be equipped with either a digital indicator or dial gauge or a measuring probe capable of up to 0.1 μm resolution. When paired with a Sylvac display unit and measuring probe, the system achieves an overall accuracy of 0.6 μm and repeatability of 0.2 μm. It is ideal for inspecting small external dimensions in delicate manufacturing environments.
Sylvac Bench Table PS16 V2 3-Points
All-in-one horizontal bench with integrated measuring system, display, and Bluetooth® technology. It measures internal dimensions from 0.8 mm to 12.5 mm, depending on the model. The 3-point measuring system and electronic calculation function allow accurate measurement of shallow internal diameters, while adjustable measuring force and fine height adjustment ensure consistent, precise results.
Measuring Inside Diameters (ID)
Measuring inside diameters (ID) in watchmaking can be more challenging than measuring outside dimensions. Small holes such as jewel settings, pivot holes, and fine gear bores require high accuracy and careful handling. This is where pin gauges become a practical and reliable solution.
Eisen pin gauges are precision-ground cylindrical pins manufactured in incremental sizes. They are designed for accurate internal diameter verification, especially in small mechanical components. The method is simple and highly effective:
- Insert the pin gauge into the hole.
- If it fits, try the next size.
- When the next size does not fit, measure the previous pin with a micrometer.
- That measurement represents the hole diameter.
This technique works exceptionally well for small holes commonly found in watch plates and bridges. It provides reliable and repeatable results while minimizing the risk of damaging delicate components.
Measuring Length
Length measurement has a direct impact on the performance of mechanical watches. A balance staff that is slightly too long can cause endshake issues, while one that is too short may reduce stability and reliability. The same applies to arbor shoulders and stacked tolerances within the movement. Even minor deviations can affect assembly accuracy and overall timekeeping performance.
Some watchmakers use feeler gauges to check spacing and endshake. While effective, this method requires experience, consistent technique, and magnification when working with micro-clearances.
Modern watchmaking workshops are increasingly adopting digital microscopy. The Dino-Lite Digital Microscope provides integrated measurement tools through its imaging software (DinoCapture). Users can measure length, diameter, angle, and radius directly on-screen.
For delicate components such as escapement parts and ultra-fine pivots, non-contact measurement reduces the risk of accidental damage. It also improves inspection documentation and measurement consistency, especially in quality control environments.
