The DeFelsko Coating Thickness Gauge, PosiTector 6000 with FLS probe, is devised to measure thick coats of intumescent paints on ferrous surfaces. It is also suited to measure other thick protective coatings on steel. Intumescent coatings are used to achieve passive fire protection for various applications such as firestopping, fireproofing, gaskets, and window casings. These coating applications are usually relevant for buildings, offshore constructions, ships, and aircraft. In many cases, such thick resin coating changes due to environmental influence, such as humidity, which reduces or negates their ability to function. Steel microstructure will change and weaken when exposed to a sudden increase in temperature like a building fire. It is believed that such damage led to the collapse of the World Trade Centre towers attacks of 9/11.
