The DeFelsko Coating Thickness Gauge, PosiTector 6000 with FLS probe, is devised to measure thick coats of intumescent paints on ferrous surfaces. It is also suited to measure other thick protective coatings on steel. Intumescent coatings are used to achieve passive fire protection for various applications such as firestopping, fireproofing, gaskets, and window casings. These coating applications are usually relevant for buildings, offshore constructions, ships, and aircraft. In many cases, such thick resin coating changes due to environmental influence, such as humidity, which reduces or negates their ability to function. Steel microstructure will change and weaken when exposed to a sudden increase in temperature like a building fire. It is believed that such damage led to the collapse of the World Trade Centre towers attacks of 9/11. On excessive heat, the intumescent coating will expand by 15 to 30 times in thickness, which then forms a thick layer of foam, thermally insulating the steel beam. As intumescent fire resistive coatings are rather expensive, you need a calibrated coating thickness gauge that can efficiently do the job which meets the prevailing standards.
